Driving Tractors, Judging Dirt and Salesmanship: Fall Career Development Events Cade Catterson and Cade Ostrander.
This past Fall our chapter competed in a variety of career development events including tractor driving, soils evaluation and agricultural sales. Members from the chapter worked to prepare for the various events and competed well.
This year the Tractor Driving CDE was held at the Madras fairgrounds, and we placed 4th as a team in the district. Competing for Crook County were Mario Hanson, Wyatt Ayers and Cade Ostrander. Events at the contest included balancing a tractor on a tilt trailer, maneuvering a long tongue trailer through a driving course, tractor parts ID and a knowledge test. As a team we did really well and have done pretty good the past couple years. Individually we all did pretty good, but Cade placed 4th overall, which may allow him to compete at the state event in August of next year.
This year the soils contest was held in Culver. This event allows competitors to test their skills in determining the physical properties of various soil types and how best to use those soils. Many FFA members and Ag students competed in the beginner and advanced team contests. The beginning team placed 5th and the advanced team placed 4th at this year’s event.
Crook County had the opportunity to host the Central Oregon FFA District Ag Sales CDE in Prineville this year. Hosted at Missionary Baptist Church, the event went very well. Teams from six Central Oregon FFA chapters met to compete in many sales areas. Included in the event were a knowledge test, a sales presentation and four practicum areas (Customer Service, Prospecting, Telephone Order Taking and Advertising Layout). The team from Crook County placed 4th at the event.
All in all, it was a solid fall for the chapter in CDE’s. While we didn’t put the banners on the wall that we hoped to, we learned a lot and had a good time competing. We were able to get together with other members from throughout the district, and build relationships that will last forever.
